POP CULTURE FACEOFF

PANIC! AT THE DISCO
vs.
3OH!3

Two bands, two albums each, two exclamation points.
Both marketed to the Tweens.
WHO!!!'S THE BEST?!

Round One: First Album
P!ATD
An emo-kid-aimed tour de force, full of electronic techno sounds mashed with then (and still) popular pop rock. It was groundbreaking (at the time).

30H!3
An indie rap album that showed how new to everything they were; the production is horrid, and the songs aren't listenable.

Winner
Panic! At The Disco
Granted, 3Oh!3 is probably at a disadvantage there because Panic! had major label backing.

Round Two: Second Album
P!ATD
A complete abandonment of what had made them famous. Fans either loved the new direction or hated it; a very polarizing experiment.

3OH!3
A work that took work. It shows on this album that A: They've been working hard, B: They've been studying the radio, and C: They came to get fame.

Winner
3Oh!3
While Panic!'s 2nd album is impressive by any measure (a pop-folk record?!), 3Oh!3 approached their 2nd album in the exact opposite manner. This, in turn, made them famous.

Round Three: Live Album
P!ATD
They released a CD/DVD last fall and to the surprise of many, were able to meld the two styles of their studio LPs; thereby making a cohesive experience out of two very different styles.

3Oh!3
An exclusive iTunes Live EP was released a few months ago showing just what can be done in a studio. It was full of shoddy vocals, unbalanced levels, and a few songs from the first album. Ew.

Winner
Panic! At The Disco
Just compare the two. You'll understand.

Round Four: Success
P!ATD
Huge...then, not-quite-so huge.

3Oh!3
Nobodies, now huge.

Winner
Draw
Huge is still huge.

Round Five: Market Domination
P!ATD
At the time, Panic! was a breakthrough, melding FOB-stylings with electronica. A month later, there were dozens of bands that sounded like Panic!. This caused Panic! to change their style, losing their steam.

3Oh!3
They're the current kings of what they do. Expect them to stay atop of things for a while, until copycat bands begin to mimic them.

Winner
3Oh!3
Time will tell, though. Even kings fall.

RESULTS
It's! A! Tie!
Looks like being exciting(!) pays off.

(Side note: The band "!!!" should probably add some letters. Seems to work.)
